Coyote Communiqué

Dear Carl,

A year ago, Cal State San Bernardino students voted to approve a fee to support the new Student Success, Graduation and Career Placement Initiative on campus. The initiative was subsequently launched this past fall and is intended to greatly expand academic and student services support for CSUSB students, with the goal of further increasing the likelihood that students will continue their education, graduate in a timely manner, and receive focused placement services to help them launch and succeed in their professional careers.

Among the initiative's components is the development of a new Veterans Success Center on campus, which will provide for our student military veterans an array of services and resources, such as academic advising, tutoring, psychological counseling, career services and other support. It'll be a one-stop resource where our student veterans, service members and their families can study, access the Internet, relax and connect with the campus community.  Perhaps most importantly, it also will have personnel available to assist student veterans in the transition from military to academic life.

The center will be an overdue and welcome addition at CSUSB. The university will host an official grand opening ceremony Friday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the flagpoles at the main entrance to campus. Later, we'll also give tours of the center, which is located at the lower level of the Coyote Bookstore.

U.S. Army veteran Marci Daniels has been appointed coordinator for the Veterans Success Center. She has a strong background working with soldiers, as well as considerable experience working with student organizations when she served at Texas Tech University. Marci also has been highly involved in the community, and we look forward to her leadership for this very valuable addition to our campus.

Friday morning's ceremony will feature bagpipe music by the Upland Highland Regimental Band, presentation of the colors by CSUSB Army and Air Force ROTC color guard teams, the pledge of allegiance and singing of the National Anthem, as well as a 21-gun salute by the Rifle Team of the Colton post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Colonel Kurt Pinkerton, a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, will be our featured speaker.

The ceremony will cap Armed Forces Awareness Week at CSUSB, in which several university organizations will have presented exhibits and events leading up to the Memorial Day weekend. For example, the center and the Student Veterans Organization initiated the university's inaugural "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Campaign," in which trees around campus have had yellow ribbons tied around their trunks in honor of deployed service members.

Please join us on Friday for the opening of our Veterans Success Center and special Memorial Day events. I hope you have a safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend and that you join with us in remembering those who have served our nation so bravely throughout its history.

Regards,

Albert Karnig
President
